The Jane Long Middle School dual language program begins at the elementary level.  Currently Milam Elementary, Johnson Elementary and Jones Elementary offer the program.  The program is expected to expand to other elementary schools in the near future.  The Dual Language program is a two-way bilingual program integrating both Spanish and English during the school day.  At the elementary level students are instructed using either the 90/10 model or the 50/50 model.  The 90/10 model provides 90% of the instruction in their native language while 10% is the new language.  The 50/50 model uses both languages equally.  The model used at Jane Long is the 50/50 model.

Currently students take Spanish for Native Speakers PreAP, Language, Spanish Social Studies PreAP or Texas History PreAP Spanish PE and Spanish Band.  During the 2009-2010 year Spanish Language Arts/Spanish for Native Speakers II & III PreAP, Spanish Texas History, Spanish Social Studies, Spanish Science, Spanish PE and Spanish Band will be offered to 6th, 7th and 8th grade students.  As students complete the program they will receive high school credit for the foreign language courses.  The goal of the program is for students to develop fluency and literacy in both Spanish and English.  Additionally students will become proficient in all academic subjects and will develop an appreciation of other cultures.

Students in the dual language program also are proficient at technology which is made possible through the use of individual laptops.  Click here to find out more about BISD's laptop immersion project.

Jane Long Middle School is the only middle school in the area offering this unique opportunity.  Because of this, students from other districts come to our campus to be a part of this program.  There are approximately 55 students in the program during the 2008-2009 school year.  It is anticipated that there will be 110 students during the 2009-2010 year and almost 175 during the 2010-2011 school year.
