What is it?
Service Learning is a teaching and learning strategy that implements a service project into the class and relates to what you are studying.  It allows students to use what they learn in the class and apply it to a project that will help those in need.  Bryan High School is a nationally recognized Service Learning Leader School and with the help of our student body, we hope to maintain our elite status.

How to become a Representative?
If you love to give to your community, if you want to become a more effective leader and can motivate your fellow students to accomplish a project, then being a Service Learning Representative might be for YOU!  For more information please visit with your 4th period teacher and tell him/her that you are interested in being the service-learning representative for your class.

What will be required of you?
Service-Learning Representatives will be required to attend monthly meetings during 4th period.  The SLYAB (Service-Learning Youth Action Board) conduct these meetings to help you with your service-learning project.  Project steps and ideas are presented to you.  Brainstorming sessions will occur.  Your job as representative will be to lead your class in the project with the help of your teacher.  You will need to compile a portfolio of your project that includes all the steps of your project and turn it in at the end of the semester.

Why should I do this?
Doing something for the good of your school or community is awesome.  It is fun!  Giving is better than receiving.   It is fun!  You will meet other “service” oriented people.  It is fun!  It will look good on your scholarship applications and college admission forms.  It is fun!  You can make a difference.  It is fun!  You get to meet people in all four grades at BHS.  It is fun!  You will have the opportunity to take tours of community agencies to assess the needs in the community.  It is fun!  You will learn how to work with a team and be a team leader.  It is fun!

Do you need more information?
You can stop by room 5222 for more information.  Ask your teacher.  Ask a SLYAB member.
