Learn and Serve

What is Service Learning?

Service Learning is a teaching and learning strategy that implements a service project into the classroom and relates it to the curriculum studied.  It allows students to use what they learn in the class and apply it to a project that will help those in need. Service-Learning is “academics in action”. Bryan High School is a nationally recognized Service-Learning Leader and has recently helped implement Service-Learning throughout the school district.

OUR HISTORY

Students of Bryan High School have been involved in Service-Learning projects since
1998. Bryan High was recognized as a National Service-Learning Leader School in 1999 and still carries that title to this day.

We have received numerous grants over the years from the National Corporation
of Service
and the Texas Center for Service-Learning to help implement service
projects. A few of these grants were the K-12 School-Community Partnership Grant and the Community-Higher Education - School Partnership Grant. These grants allowed BHS to hire a full time staff member to work with Service-Learning along with community service projects at BHS. Through these grants we have partnered with Texas A&M, the United Way, the Boys and Girls Club and the City of Bryan to implement service activities for our students. We have also
received numerous smaller grants such as the State Farm Corporation grant.

OUR GOALS

  • Encourage all BHS students to perform 20 hours of service each semester
through service-learning projects and club activities

  • Create more Youth Boards/Cabinets in the community
  • Strengthen the service clubs at BHS
  • Implement service-learning district wide
  • Observe and participate in National Days of Service
  • Promote civic responsibility
  • Help the City of Bryan and College Station with the Cumminuty of Promise initiative

  • In striving to reach these goals, we will be preparing our students to become
participatory and caring citizens of Bryan . In addition, volunteer service is a
valuable component to competitive student scholarships, grants and awards as well
as presenting critical university admission consideration.

We have numerous students who serve on the following Youth Boards: United Way
Youth Leadership Cabinet, Keep Brazos Beautiful Youth Environmental League,
Junior Leadership Brazos, Junior Board of Directors- FNB and Keystone- BGCA. We
would like to see more of these boards created to allow students to work in the
    community.

We plan numerous service projects for the following National Days of
    Service
and would like to work with area businesses, agencies and
    organizations on these days:

October    – National Make a Difference Day

January    - Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Feb 2nd    – National Groundhog Job Shadow Day
