Course Description  
Welcome to Chemistry!! Chemistry covers the structure and properties of matter. In this class we will learn about the nature of matter and the physical and chemical changes it can undergo.

Class Expectations and Consequences
o       Expectations
§       Follow directions
§       Do not enter or leave the lab area without permission
§       No horse-play or play-fighting
§       Respect others and their belongings
§       Follow all BHS Rules

o       Consequences
§       1st Offense: warning/student-teacher conference
§       2nd Offense: 30 minute detention and phone call home
§       3rd Offense:  Office referral

Grades
o       Grading scale

§       A = 90-100              
§       B = 80-89

Tutorials
o       I am always willing to help you if you are having trouble.  Please do not hesitate to ask questions if you are confused.  Don’t wait until the day before the test to ask questions!!
o       Tutorials:  
§       Tuesday (before and after school): 8-8:25 AM and 3:50-4:20 PM
§       Thursday (before and after school): 8-8:25 AM and 3:50-4:20 PM
§       By appointment

Tardy
o       You must be inside the room when the last tardy bell rings.  If you are not, you must go to room 3101 (Mr. Allen’s office) to get a tardy pass.

ID’s
o       You must have your ID on and visible when you enter the room.  If you do not have an ID, you must get one and you will need a TARDY pass to enter the room.  The receipt for an ID will not count as a pass.  Sorry!!

Planner
o       You must have YOUR planner to leave the room.  You many not use another student’s planner to leave.  Sorry!!

Procedures

o       What do I do when the bell rings to start class?
§       You need to be in the room when the bell rings.
§       You have 3 minutes after the bell rings to get prepared.  During that time prepare yourself by doing the following
·       
·       P – Pick up papers
·       R – Read the board
·       E – Engage in the PREPARE activity
·       P – Pen or pencil ready
·       A – Assignments turned in (if due)
·       R Retrieve make-up work
·       E – End your conversation
o       
o       What should I do at the end of class?
§       Please wait to pack up materials until I ask you to do so.  You will usually be given the last 3 minutes of class to do so.
§       Clean up the area around your desk
§       Do not leave the class room until dismissed. (Do not line up at the door!)

o       How do I turn in my homework?
§       Homework will be assigned in class and stamped at the start of class the day it is due.  (it must be at least 90% complete to get a stamp)
§       Homework without a stamp is considered late.
§       If you are absent the day that homework was due, it is YOUR responsibility to show it to me the day you get back to get your stamp!
§       If you are absent the day that homework was assigned, you get 2 days for every day absent.  Be careful not to fall too far behind.
§       The maximum grade for late work is 75% with 5% taken off for each additional day (maximum grade if turned in after 5 days late is 50%).

o       What do I do if I miss class?
§       Missed and graded work can be picked up in the assignment box.  It is YOUR responsibility to pick up any missed work.  
§       If you are gone for more than one day or have any questions please come and talk with me.  You can also contact the school to get your assignments.

o       How many restroom passes do we get?
§       You will get 2 restroom passes every 6-weeks.  Extra credit will be given if you do not use either of the two passes. If you use one hall pass, you will not get credit for the remaining hall pass.

Lab
o       You will be told when we will be doing labs.
o       If you miss lab because you were absent, see me about making it up (you have 1 week).
o       If you wear inappropriate shoes or clothing you will not be allowed to participate in the actual lab activity.  You will have to make up the lab.  

Supplies
o       3-ring binder
o       paper
o       pencil and/or pen

Test Corrections

-       You have one week to complete the test corrections after we go over the test in class.
-       You need to get the current chemistry progress report signed by a parent or guardian with a valid telephone number.
-       You can earn up to half of the credit back that you lost (does not include bonus questions or extra credit questions!!)

Questions
1.      Write out the question with the correct answer.
2.      Write out an explanation of why that answer is correct referring to your notes or the book.
3.      Page number that you used from either your book or notes.

Example
1.      When a _____ occurs, new substances are formed.  A: chemical change
2.      chemical change: change that occurs when one or more substances change into new substances   (definition from notes)
3.      Notes: page 3

Problem
1.      Write out the question with the correct answer
2.      Work out the problem step by step explaining what you are doing each step
3.      Page number that you used from either the book or notes.

Example
1.      What is the density of an object having a mass of 8.0 g and a volume of 25 cm3? A: 0.32 g / cm3

2.       D = m/V                         - Write down the density equation

= 8.0 g / 25 cm3         - Substitute the numbers from the problem in    
                         the equation

        D = 0.32 g / cm3                 - Solve for density by dividing mass by volume
