Rationale:
The play Othello provides AP students with an opportunity to explore the use of foils and irony in a tragedy. In addition, a character study of Iago enables students to understand how a writer uses the nature of the character’s villainy to enhance the meaning of the work.  Also, Othello’s internal and external conflicts provide ample examples for a thorough character study and a basis to analyze the complex relationships in the play.  The assignments in this unit are completed during a six week period over approximately sixteen days.
